Due to the inherent horizontality of the 1950’s ranch style home, the challenge became how one defines spaces while maintaining flow, visibility and conversely, managing sight-lines to maintain privacy where needed. This was primarily achieved through the use of anchoring elements, such as the new linear fireplace and dropping the ceiling to delineate spaces volumetrically. By creating a light shelf in the bulkhead, this provided an opportunity for indirect, linear lighting at the perimeter.
